Description
In a nutshell:
There's plenty of big flavours in this ripe and heady Spanish red crowd-pleaser.
The lowdown:
When you're after bright and ripe, dark fruit-filled refreshment this is one to reach for. Not oaked, it's just oozing with bramble, plum and mocha flavours wrapped up in smooth, unobtrusive tannins. Jumilla is in the hot and dry province of Murcia in southeast Spain and Monastrell, aka Mourvèdre or Mataro in other parts, is the grape that suits this terrain to a tee making this just this type of big, ripe and flavour packed wine for which the area is renowned.
The Producer:
The Gil family have been producers in Jumilla since the early 20th century but took a major step forward when Miguel Gil, great-grandson of the company's founder, built a new bodega in time for the 2003 vintage. Situated on the slopes of the Peñarrubia mountain, the highest part of Jumilla with poor stony soils noted for its richly flavoured, concentrated Monastrell, the bodega owns over 750 hectares of vineyards. They're dedicated to producing powerful yet approachable, modern styles naturally based on Monastrell, which dominate their vineyards and the whole Jumilla region.
When to drink:
No need to overthink this one - it's simply a tasty and satisfying glugger. Pasta, pizza and casseroles, or football on the telly are just what it goes with.
Suitable for Vegans
