Nikka's first distillery built in 1934 due to the environment resembling that of Scotland's. A firm and powerful attack with plenty of fresh fruit, nuts, spices and a peaty smokiness with a long and silky finish.
The Distiller:
The Nikka Whisky Company was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who brought his passion for whisky back to Japan after studying in Glasgow and marrying a Scot. The company boasts two distilleries. The original, Yoichi, is on Hokkaido's northern island, where the climate and geography resemble Scotland. Yoichis whiskies are known for their rich, peaty, and robust character. Meanwhile, the Miyagikyo distillery in Miyagi prefecture produces softer, more delicate expressions. They are owned by the Asahi Group.
