Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt

The lowdown:
A no-age statement Taketsura which is a blend of malts aged 10yrs on average in different types of oak casks. A high proportion of Miyagikyo gives it a fresh, fruity character joined with more mature aromas from the important sherry cask influence.

The Distiller:
The Nikka Whisky Company was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who brought his passion for whisky back to Japan after studying in Glasgow and marrying a Scot. The company boasts two distilleries. The original, Yoichi, is on Hokkaido's northern island, where the climate and geography resemble Scotland. Yoichi’s whiskies are known for their rich, peaty, and robust character. Meanwhile, the Miyagikyo distillery in Miyagi prefecture produces softer, more delicate expressions. They are owned by the Asahi Group.
