Description
In a nutshell:
An organic Valencian white with bright floral aromas, crisp stone-fruit flavours, and a subtle mineral edge that gives it both character and charm.
The lowdown:
This Valencian white blend is led by Merseguera, a regional variety rarely seen outside southeast Spain, with Viognier and Malvasia adding extra depth. When handled well, Merseguera can be very interesting. Fortunately, Mustiguillo know how to bring out the best in it, and in this old-vine, organic - almost natural - wine, they're right on song. Bright and floral on the nose, with lime and citrus notes leading into crisp, dry stone-fruit flavours and a touch of spice. There's good weight, plenty of character, and an easy-going appeal - showing that Merseguera has something to say in the right hands.
The Producer:
Toni Sarrión is the man behind Bodega Mustiguillo. His Valencian estate sits up in the rugged Utiel-Requena backcountry well away from the coast. He's all about once sneered at local grapes now turned into something seriously exciting. Hallmark Mustiguillo wines are a bit earthy and spicy. Not so much polished sunshine-in-a-bottle stuff, more rough-and-tumble with deep connection to the land. Above all theres a pride showing through of taking unloved varieties and really making them sing.
When to drink:
Valencias own, this is a natural with seafood paella, bringing out its saffron and shellfish richness. It'll also shine with the likes of grilled seabass or a classic spaghetti alle vongole, its crisp fruit keeping everything beautifully fresh.
Suitable for Vegans, Organic
