Description
In a nutshell:
A Blonde Belgian Abbey style beer from the Duvel Moortgat Brewery near Antwerp.
The lowdown:
Abbey beers are something of a Belgian speciality and this one has been brewed under licence from the monks of Maredsous Abbey since 1963. Clear and golden coloured with a thick, white head there are aromas of honey, a slight smokiness and a subtle note of caramel. It has a touch of bitterness and a clean gently hopped taste which ends with a perfectly balanced aftertaste.
The Brewery:
Maredsous is an brewery near Namur which was attached to the Benedictine abbey founded in 1872. The beers used to be brewed by the abbey's monks, but in recent years Duvel-Moortgat have taken over production under licence from the abbey. Duvel-Moortgat's clout has certainly helped the beers gain recognition, but the abbey still keeps involved in recipes and branding. The result is a range of high qualty beers that honour the abbey's monastic heritage.
