Description
In a nutshell:
A very fine, mature Merlot from the renowned Piemonte producer Marchesi di Grésy.
The lowdown:
Marchesi di Grésy are a top Barbaresco and Langhe estate that produces stunning wines. This Monferrato Rosso is 100% Merlot and pound-for-pound stands up to anything Bordeuax, or the New World for that matter, has to offer. A small half hectare single-vineyard Merlot located in the Serralunga d'Alba Barolo commune situated on a hilltop with a southerly exposure just next to the Barolo Cru vineyard of La Serra. These Merlot grapes were originally intended to be blended with ones from the neighbouring Barbera vineyard however owner Alberto di Grésy so was so impressed with the fruit that he had to produce this single varietal wine. After fermentation the wine goes through an extensive ageing process before release including 12 months in used French oak followed by a further 24 months in traditional Slavonian oak and then up to two years in bottle.
A fine wine with complex aromas of plum, damson and cherry with developed notes of leather, sweet spice and black pepper with earthy touches. Medium-bodied on the elegant palate dark plum, sour cherry, cedar oak, vanilla and balsamic notes with fine, dry tannins, structured, balanced acidity and a long finish.
When to drink:
Excellent wine with real pedigree. Try with simply cooked steak, game, rabbit or lamb, casseroles, or wild boar ragu.
Suitable for Vegans
