Description
In a nutshell:
A beguiling whisper of sun-baked garrigue and spice weaves its way through ripe plums and dark cherries - Lirac with a touch of rustic soul.
The lowdown:
This isn't a wine that screams for attention. Instead, it whispers seductively of sun-baked garrigue herbs, black cherries, and a hint of liquorice. There's nothing showy here, just an honest, earthy expression of the Southern Rhône. On the palate, expect a surprisingly silky texture for such a rustic-looking wine. Ripe fruit and fine tannins lead the way, with a subtle spice lingering on the finish. This comes from old vines, some over fifty years in age, rooted in the classic Lirac mix of sandy soils and the region's iconic galets roulés (those big, heat-retaining pebbles). The wine is made with minimal fuss - wild yeast fermentation, aging in a combination of concrete and seasoned oak. The winemakers believe this hands-off approach allows the character of the Lirac terroir to shine through. Biodynamic principles further strengthen that connection to their land. If you crave bold fruit bombs, this isn't your bottle. But if you relish the quiet complexity and savory side of the Rhône, the Moulin des Chênes is well worth seeking out.
The Producer
The Bréchet brothers, Laurent and Julien, are well-versed in the language of the Southern Rhône. Château de Vaudieu, their Chateauneuf-du-Pape flagship, speaks volumes. But when they caught wind of some prime Lirac plots, well, their ears pricked up. Lirac, if you're not familiar, sits across the Rhône from Chateauneuf. Think of it as the slightly unruly younger brother. Same ancient soils strewn with those iconic galet stones, same sun-drenched hours, yet a fraction of the fame - and price.
When to drink:
Enjoy the sun-drenched spice and ripe berry charm of this now and through to 2025, ideally alongside a hearty lamb stew flavoured with rosemary and thyme.
Suitable for Vegans
