Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth and approachable Pauillac, with juicy blackcurrant, a hint of spice, and soft tannins that keep it effortlessly elegant.
The lowdown:
The second wine of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, this is always a pretty savvy choice when it comes to reliability and value, and the 2019 vintage is as impressive as they come. The bouquet is lovely, with blackberry and fresh raspberry, alongside delicate floral notes that reveal themselves with time. The oak is subtle and well-balanced, while the palate offers supple tannins, well-judged acidity, and a medium-bodied feel. There's a touch of graphite on the finish, giving a nod to its Pauillac roots. A carefully crafted left-bank claret that offers a lot for the money.
The Producer:
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a 5ème Cru Classé estate in Pauillac that consistently punches above its weight. Its been in the hands of the Borie family since 1978, a name well-known and respected in Bordeaux circles. Various branches of the family own a number of prestigious châteaux, but Grand-Puy-Lacoste has always been something of a standout. François-Xavier Borie took over management of the estate in 2003, bringing his considerable expertise to the table, and he now works closely with his daughter Emeline to maintain the estates reputation. Winemaking is firmly rooted in tradition but with an eye for detail and quality. The estate is known for producing wines with classic structure, depth, and elegance, while still being approachable.
When to drink:
This is in its prime now but will keep nicely through to the end of the decade. Pair it with venison and blackcurrant jus or beef with a buckwheat galette - cutting edge cuisine that matches its juicy black fruit and soft tannins perfectly.
