Description
In a nutshell:
If you yearn for a Kiwi Chardonnay with grace and poise, yet offers exceptional value, then look no further.
The lowdown:
A delightful little number this, with a whisper of toast and hazelnuts that never overpowers the burst of citrus and juicy stone fruits. Imagine a morning jog through a dew-kissed orchard, that's the refreshing minerality that lingers. Crafted with the same dedication as their grander wines, it uses grapes from both Kumeu and Hawkes Bay, fermented partly in oak barrels for a touch of complexity. This isn't your average Chardonnay, it's a New Zealander with a touch of French finesse, and a cracking introduction to a winery that takes Chardonnay seriously, but never takes itself too seriously.
The Producer:
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
When to drink:
A versatile white with a splash of sunshine, perfect for a simple roast chicken or a pan-fried piece of salmon.
