Description
In a nutshell:
Craving a touch of New Zealand sunshine? This crisp Chardonnay offers citrusy zest and fragrant florals for a delightful escape in a glass.
The lowdown:
Think less peaches and cream, more zesty citrus and a subtle kiss of oak. This Chardonnay hails from a special, limestone-rich patch of earth in New Zealand, kissed by the sun. Handpicked grapes, a little wild yeast, and a gentle rest in old French barrels all contribute to its character. The result? A wine that's vibrant and fresh, with a subtle minerality that whispers of its origins. Expect clean, understated elegance, not a big, buttery affair.
The Producer:
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
When to drink:
A deeply satisfying white, its buttery richness is a fine partner for roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes, or a simple plate of fish and chips.
