Keith Tulloch Hunter Valley Semillon 2023
Classic Hunter Valley Semillon – bright and citrusy and a distinctly Australian one-off. It’s zesty and refreshing now, but will also develop and age gracefully.
The Lowdown
This Hunter Valley Semillon has something of the mineral precision of a Sauvignon or Riesling. What sets it apart is its pure lemon zest and lime intensity, feather-light body and a subtle, unfussy aroma that gives the crisp, citrusy palate centre stage. At just 11% it sits comfortably at the lighter end of the alcohol scale. It's made to drink young, but Hunter Valley Semillon is also one of the great ageworthy whites – give it five to ten years and it will slowly take on toast, honey and greater depth.
The Occasion
Made for seafood: oysters, prawns, lightly grilled fish or a simple fish pie all work well with its clean, citrusy acidity. Equally good on its own – light and refreshing enough that it doesn't demand anything else.
The Producer
Keith Tulloch Wine is a small, family-owned estate in the heart of New South Wales’ Hunter Valley. Keith and his wife Amanda launched the label in 1997 and later acquired their main vineyard, Field of Mars, and winery on Hermitage Road, Pokolbin. The vines, planted from 1968 on alluvial sands on the ancient floodplains of Rothbury Creek, supply the Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier and Shiraz that form the core of their range. Today the family runs a certified carbon-neutral estate, seen as a regional leader in low-impact Hunter Valley winemaking.
