Description
In a nutshell:
A polished Stellenbosch Chardonnay with zesty citrus, ripe stone fruit, and a whisper of vanilla - fresh yet stylishly smooth.
The lowdown:
Journeys End's 'V' series highlights how different varieties thrive in their unique terroir, and V1 puts Chardonnay in the spotlight. It's a neat balancing act between crisp citrus and mineral freshness, ripe stone and tropical fruits, and the softness and complexity from subtle oak ageing. Nine months in mainly old oak adds a gentle creaminess and hints of spice without overshadowing the vibrant fruit. Lemon, apple, pear, and pineapple shine through on a fresh, tangy finish. A Chardonnay that feels a tadge indulgent yet refreshingly restrained.
The Producer:
Tucked away In Stellenbosch's Schapenberg hills, Journey's End Vineyards have a view that would make even the most jaded traveller pause. It's not just a pretty spot though - this part of the world is tailor-made for growing grapes. Owned by the Gabb family since 1995, originally from Shropshire in the UK, they've grown from modest beginnings into a highly respected estate. Their philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: minimal intervention, maximum expression of the terroir. The results are wines that speak for themselves - and the steady stream of awards they get suggests they've struck the right balance between craft and nature.
When to drink:
Corn chowder, baked walleye, or a classic chicken pot pie all work a treat, with the wine's creamy texture and bright acidity lifting these homely, rustic dishes nicely.
