Description
In a nutshell:
A bold Stellenbosch red blend with rich dark fruit, a touch of earthy spice, and smooth tannins - big and complex, but in perfect balance.
The lowdown:
This Bordeaux Blend is one of Journey's End's top reds, crafted from a single, low-yielding vineyard block that consistently delivers concentrated, high-quality fruit. Named after the Cape Doctor, the strong wind from False Bay that extends the ripening period, the wine benefits from bold flavours and naturally balanced acidity. A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 40% Merlot, it's big and rich with dark fruit and cassis, layered with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. The smooth body, ripe tannins, and fresh acidity lead to a long, satisfying finish. Plenty of depth and finesse on show here.
The Producer:
Tucked away In Stellenbosch's Schapenberg hills, Journey's End Vineyards have a view that would make even the most jaded traveller pause. It's not just a pretty spot though - this part of the world is tailor-made for growing grapes. Owned by the Gabb family since 1995, originally from Shropshire in the UK, they've grown from modest beginnings into a highly respected estate. Their philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: minimal intervention, maximum expression of the terroir. The results are wines that speak for themselves - and the steady stream of awards they get suggests they've struck the right balance between craft and nature.
When to drink:
Drinking beautifully now or happy to wait until the end of the decade, it's perfect with beef bourguignon, coq au vin, or a wild mushroom ragout - hearty dishes that match its dark fruit and spice nicely.
