Description
In a nutshell:
An elegant and approachable, organic Georgian red.
The lowdown:
Saperavi is the grape variety here and it's the signature red wine grape of Georgia in particular and the wider Caucasus region in general. Here in the capable hands of Zurab Topuridze, a passionate natural winemaker, it makes a medium bodied with a generous richness that's well balanced with a crisp acidity and flinty minerality. The cherry red fruit aromas and touch of florality give a certain delicacy and, very slightly chilled, it makes a very refreshing wine that certainly goes down well. In all it's an excellent example of the quality that's coming from this ancient wine producing region.
The Producer:
Iberieli is a family-owned winery run by Zurab Topuridze. They have 10 hectares of vineyards in the Guria Region of Western Georgia and a further 5 hectares in the Kakheti Region in the east of the country. Zurab himself has been involved in winemaking from childhood starting out by helping his grandfather. After he married, he bought a small house in his wife's native village of Dablatsikhe and it's here in the coastal lowlands of the Guria region, by the Black Sea, where his winery is to be found. The name Iberieli, chosen by Zurab's children, refers to the ancient inhabitants of the Caucasus who started making wine several thousands of years ago, these people later became Georgians and are believed to be the originators of making wine using the Qvevri, egg-shaped earthenware vessels which are set into the ground. The family's aim is to maintain the authentic tradition of Qvevri wine making in Georgia, producing unique natural wines from native grapes which are true expressions of the nation's ancient traditions.
When to drink:
Try with cold meats or drink slightly chilled with barbcues sat outside.
Suitable for Vegans, Organic
