Description
In a nutshell:
Pitch-black export stout that delivers a powerful hit of roasted bitterness.
The lowdown:
Generously hopped and with a higher gravity, this was originally brewed to withstand long sea voyages to the Caribbean. It delivered a bold, complex flavour that quickly earned a popularity which continues to this day. Its robust and complex with roasted barley and coffee notes standing out and has subtle dark fruit notes, finishing with a marked bitterness due to the extra hops used. An undeniably satisfying stout.
The Brewery:
The story of Guinness begins in 1759, when Arthur Guinness secured a long lease for the St. James's Gate brewery in Dublin. Initially focused on ales, Guinness soon transitioned to a dark brew - a porter in the style popularised in London. However, the key difference was Irish barley. Rich in nitrogen, it yielded a smooth mouthfeel and the iconic creamy head, a stark contrast to the harsh stouts of the time. By the 19th century, Guinness had become a national treasure that evolved into a symbol of Ireland itself which endures to this day.
