Description
In a nutshell:
An extraordinarily rich and complex Albariño from Galicia.
The lowdown:
Only made in the best vintages Bodegas Granbazán's Don Álvaro de Bazán Albariño is an ultimate expression of the region and shows what this grape can produce. Situated in the Val do Salnés in the heart of Rías Baixas the grapes for Don Álvaro come from a single vineyard, the highest in the estate, with poor sandy, granite soils, resulting in a low yield and high intensity of flavours. After fermentation the wine is left for a long period of 24 months on its lees giving it a great weight, smoothness and richness with great depth of flavour and complexity before then spending over 4 years maturing in bottle. Intense aromas of ripe citrus, mature orchard fruit, blossom and honeyed notes. The palate is dry and rounded with stone and tropical fruit notes and a real typical crisp minerally acid backbone with almost saline touches that follow through onto a very long finish.
The Producer:
Bodegas Granbazán, founded in 1981, sits in the heart of Val do Salnés, Rías Baixas. The winery, complete with a charming Bordeaux-style manor house, is surrounded by the 13.5-hectare Finca Tremoedo vineyard. Their focus is all about the Albariño grape, planting a variety of clones from across Galicia. The vineyard itself is divided into 10 distinct plots, each with its own microclimate, all carefully tended and harvested separately. This attention to detail ensures the production of some truly remarkable Albariño wines.
When to drink:
Drinking beautifully now though still capable of ageing for another 5 years or so. Try with all types of seafood, in particular lobster, langoustines, and scallops.
Suitable for Vegetarians
