Description
In a nutshell:
A pure and elegant, fruit forward German Pinot Noir from the Bavarian wine region of Franconia.
The lowdown:
The vineyards on which the grapes for this wine are grown are on south facing slopes of the Centgrafenberg overlooking the picturesque towns of Miltenberg and Bürgstadt. Minimal intervention, gentle vinification and long barrel ageing is key to the winemaking and the quality of the finished product shows how this pays off. It's a delicious wine that wipes the floor with lots of similarly priced Burgundy. The nose offers a big basket full of red fruits, black pepper, bitter almonds and spice. Vibrant fruit with soft, velvety tannins and subtle, complex layers of flavour.
The Producer:
The Franconian village of Bürgstadt, where they've been rooted since 1638, is where you'll find Weingut Rudolph Fürst. The estate as we know it today owes much to Paul and Monika Fürst, who, in the 1970s and 1980s, built new facilities on the village outskirts and expanded the vineyards to over 20 hectares, largely planted with Spatburgunder, aka Pinot Noir. Paul and his son Sebastian are both celebrated winemakers, each honoured as German Winemaker of the Year. Together, they've built an enviable reputation for their wines, blending tradition and innovation with an effortlessly understated finesse.
When to drink:
Roast pork or, slightly pink lamb are winning food combinations here as would be hearty vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms and root vegetables.
