Description
In a nutshell:
A soft and rounded, premium Italian rosé sparkling wine from the Lombardy region.
The lowdown:
The Franciacorta wine region in Lombardy is an area of rolling hills just west of Brescia and is home to the country's best sparkling wines. And Ferghettina themselves, as one of the leading producers, have played a significant part in bringing this region to prominence. This, their vintage rosé is made just with Pinot Noir grapes (aka Pinot Nero in Italy) and is left just a short time on its skins after pressing, enough to create just the merest hint of pink. It spends 36 months on its lees to bring out bready, brioche notes which well complement the cranberry and raspberry fruit flavours and aromas. Fresh, elegant and dry this is the equal of many a more expensive pink Champagne.
The Producer:
Ferghettina is a stand-out example showing that Italian sparkling wine isn't just about Prosecco. Founded in 1991 by Roberto Gatti and very much a family-run affair, they specialise in Franciacorta, Italy's top sparkling wine. With over 200 hectares of vines, mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they create a range of styles from their base in Adro, between Milan and Brescia. Franciacorta from talented producers like Ferghettina really stands up to Champagne, both in quality and price. And if you're interested in exploring serious Italian bubbles, Ferghettina offers a journey well worth embarking on.
When to drink:
Quite charming, its delightful with shellfish, mozzarella and tomato salads and with dim sum a real hit.
Suitable for Vegans
