Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth, satisfying red from Portugal's Alentejo, with ripe dark fruit, a touch of spice, and balanced freshness.
The lowdown:
This is a perennial favourite, and it's easy to see why. A combination of good value and smooth suppleness it's packed with black fruit and wild berry flavours, with just a touch of fresh spice in the mix. There's surprising depth here too - rich and intense, but without any heaviness, and a bit of structure that gives it a bit of presence. No oak, so the fruit comes first, making it wonderfully easy to drink while still having plenty of length.
The Producer:
Since starting out in 1973, Herdade do Esporão has grown into one of the leading estates in the Alentejo, and in the process have brought the wines of this warm, dry region to an audience that pushes far beyond Portugal. Their work with indigenous grape varieties reflects a deep understanding of the local terroir, producing wines that are true to their origins. Sustainability is also central to their approach, with a strong commitment to organic practices. Above all, their wines speak for themselves - thoughtful, well-made, and full of character, showing exactly why the Alentejo has earned its place on the world wine map.
When to drink:
How about sticky ribs, grilled lamb, or charred aubergine - rich but unfussy, it's got the bold fruit and fresh spice to handle smoky barbecue flavours without overpowering them.
