Description
In a nutshell:
A quintessential Saint-Julien - pure, elegant, and effortlessly refined, with dark berry fruit, fine tannins, and that unmistakable Left Bank poise.
The lowdown:
Duluc de Branaire-Ducru is very much in the mould of the chateau's grand vin but made to be enjoyed a little sooner. A near-even split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot gives it both structure and generosity, with layers of ripe dark fruit and delicate florals lifting the nose. Twelve months in French oak adds depth without overshadowing its natural elegance, while the round, fleshy palate really brings out the richness of the fruit. The tannins are smooth and finely judged, leading to a long, aromatic finish. Savoury, satisfying, and unmistakably Saint-Julien.
The Producer:
A quatrième cru classé Médoc estate, Château Branaire-Ducru has made some good strides over the past two decades. One of the first in Bordeaux to adopt a gravity-fed winery, it's known for a refined, elegant style that favours grace over sheer power. Reliable and effortlessly polished, its wines have a reputation for ageing beautifully while always remaining a pleasure to drink. For a cru classé Saint-Julien, it also offers particularly good value along with serious pedigree.
When to drink:
This is at the peak of maturity and perfect for immediate drinking. The classic Claret - roast lamb combination is a sure fire winner with this.
