Description
In a nutshell:
A bright, minerally southern French white with a punchy freshness that takes you straight to the Catalan coast near Perpignan.
The lowdown:
While Roussillon might be known for its reds, Domaine Lafage proves the whites here deserve a second look too. Crafted from 80% Grenache Gris and 20% Roussanne, grown near the coast at Canet en Roussillon, this wine has a bit of seaside freshness. Mostly aged in stainless steel, with 30% spending time in new French oak, it gains an extra layer of texture and complexity. Expect bright citrus, peach, and a hint of florals on the nose, carrying through to the palate with a subtle touch of spice. Medium-bodied with a good length, it finishes with a gentle freshness.
The Producer:
Jean-Marc Lafage's family had been growing grapes for their local co-op in Roussillon for six generations but it was his desire to produce wines reflecting his own style and approach that led to him and his oenologist wife, Eliane, to set up Domaine Lafage. From small beginnings in 1996 the estate now runs to some 138 hectares of vines spread across the Agly Valley, Aspres and Perpignan. The Agly Valley in particular, with its black shale and layered schist soil in the shadow of ruined Cathar castles is one of Europes most exciting terroirs. Eliane and Jean-Marc specialise in growing old vines that impart pronounced minerality and concentration to their wines. Whilst the region is best known for its reds, the whites they produce are of the absolute best quality and certainly shouldn't be overlooked.
When to drink:
With its ripe, rounded flavours, this one's lovely on its own but also gets along famously with a bit of grilled fish or a well-seasoned poultry dish.
