Setting the bar high for Californian sparkling wines, this one's quite an eye-opener from Domaine Carneros - a legacy that's no surprise given their ownership by Champagne Taittinger. The blend varies slightly each vintage but is always more or less equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and makes for a slightly richer, full-bodied style than many. On the palate, notes of peach, lemon, almond, and toasted brioche are layered with a hint of honey, all balanced by fresh acidity and fine, delicate bubbles. With real elegance and depth, it shows off the best of Napa's sparkling wine craftsmanship.
The Producer:
Perched at the southern end of Napa Valley, Domaine Carneros is hard to miss with its grand French château-style winery overlooking the Sonoma Highway. Founded in 1987 by the family behind Champagne Taittinger, the estate was established to craft Californian wines that could rival their exceptional Champagnes. The vineyards span over 150 hectares, all close to the château, with two-thirds planted to Pinot Noir and the rest to Chardonnay. While renowned for their impressive sparkling wines, they also produce excellent still reds from their Pinot Noir vines, showcasing the estates commitment to quality and its blend of French tradition and Californian flair.
When to drink:
Great as an aperitif, it also loves light Asian dishes or goat's cheese - its bright acidity and fine bubbles cut through creamy textures and delicate flavours like a pro.
