Description
In a nutshell:
Elegant, spicy, and firmly structured, this Côtes-du-Rhône from a top Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate layers dark fruit, warm spice, and silky tannins with effortless charm.
The lowdown:
A bit pricey for a Côtes-du-Rhône? Maybe - but look at the pedigree, and it all makes sense. Château de Beaucastel sits firmly among the top Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers, and this comes from vineyards just outside the boundary. In many ways, it's a Châteauneuf in all but name. The blend leans on Grenache and Mourvèdre, much like its prestigious sibling, bringing elegance and sophistication in equal measure. Perfumed red and dark fruits, spice, and dry herbs mingle with touches of garrigue, while the palate is smooth, medium-full bodied, and beautifully balanced. Silky yet deep tannins round it all out, making this a Rhône red with real class.
The Producer:
One of the most prestigious estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel has a history stretching back to the sixteenth century, when it was founded by Pierre de Beaucastel. The Perrin family took ownership in the early 1900s, and it remains the jewel in their collection of highly regarded domaines. For decades, it was run by brothers Jean-Pierre and François Perrin, before François' son, César, took over in 2018. Their wines have a devoted global following and are consistently ranked among the finest in the region. A true pioneer of sustainable viticulture, Beaucastel converted to organic farming in 1950 and embraced biodynamics in 1974 - long before it became fashionable. Tradition, innovation, and a commitment to quality make the estate a true Rhône icon.
When to drink:
Versatile and approachable, this pairs beautifully with dishes like spiced lamb tagine or grilled chicken with harissa - the warm spices and rich flavours work seamlessly with its deep fruit and smooth tannins.
