A generous, juicy and organic red from the Marche region in Central Italy.
The lowdown:
Marche, is one of Italy's lesser known wine regions and sits on the Adriatic coast across the Apennines from Tuscany. However there's plenty going on in these parts with some excellent and good value nuggets to be found. This Rosso Picenco is, we reckon, one such example. It's a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese which is fermented and aged in stainless steel. Bright red in colour, it's rose scented underneath with a layer of strawberry aromas coming through as you drink it. On the palate it got succulent berry flavours with a gentle spiciness, soft texture and a mere hint of supple tannins. At it's best young and fresh it's a wine which shines even more when served very slightly chilled.
The Producer:
Ciù Ciù Vini is run by brothers Massimiliano and Walter Bartolomei. The estate is situated near the town of Offida in the heart of the Piceno hills in the Marche region of central Italy only a few kilometres from the Adriatic coast. In their extensive vineyards they cultivate a wide range of varieties on an organic basis and are keen that their wines represent an authentic expression of their region - terroir, and particularly that of their local area, which is something dear to the Bartolomei brother's hearts.
When to drink:
An uncomplicated, but juicy and pleasurable glugger. Perfect to drink on its own, or pair it with cured meats and light pasta dishes.
