Description
In a nutshell:
A bold southern Rhône classic, balancing rich red and black fruits with a hint of spice and a satisfyingly smooth finish.
The lowdown:
This classic southern Rhône red is driven by Grenache, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, with a pinch of the appellations's other permitted varieties in the mix. After 18 months in large oak foudres, it's developed a firm structure and has the bold, expressive character you'd expect from good Châteauneuf. Blackberries, cassis, and a touch of liquorice lead on the nose, while the palate balances Grenache's red fruit with notes of spice, cedar, and pepper. Full-bodied and smooth with a warming kick of spice, it finishes long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression.
The Producer:
The Mestre family has been part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape for four generations, with Christophe Mestre now at the helm after taking over from his father Jacques. The estate includes 17 hectares of vines spread across different parcels, each with its own distinct soil. This variety allows Christophe to create wines that capture the character of the Châteauneuf terroir. It's thoughtful winemaking rooted in tradition, with a clear focus on bringing out the best of the region. Well-crafted wines, full of classic charm.
When to drink:
Cassoulet de la mer or rabbit with tapenade would go nicely with this - hearty, rustic dishes that complement the wine's rich fruit and spicy depth.
