Description
In a nutshell:
A timeless Saint-Julien, with ripe dark fruit, smooth tannins, and a touch of cedar to keep things nicely balanced.
The lowdown:
This Saint-Julien might not be a cru classé, but most would say really ought to be. It's a blend of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a dash of Petit Verdot, aged for 14 months in 40% new oak. On the nose, you've got ripe red fruits and a whisper of vanilla, and the palate is all about blackcurrants, soft tannins, and a smooth, sleek texture. There's a nice bit of depth to it too, with a touch of coffee sneaking in at the finish. Full of character and charm, it's up there with the big hitters of the appellation..
The Producer:
Château Gloria is one of those estates that probably should have been a cru classé but missed out for the simple reason that it didn't exist when the classification was drawn up in 1855. So being founded in 1942, it's something of a newcomer by Bordeaux standards, but that hasn't stopped it from earning a solid reputation for producing some of the most dependable wines in Saint-Julien. Its 50 hectares of vineyards are a bit of a patchwork, made up of parcels acquired over time from some serious heavyweights like Châteaux Beychevelle, Léoville-Barton, and Gruaud-Larose. That setup works a treat, with the estate consistently turning out wines that punch well above their weight. Reliable, well-made, and quietly impressive, it's the sort of Bordeaux you can be confident will deliver the goods.
When to drink:
This is drinking nicely now but will easily see you through the 2030s if you've the patience. Pair it with something hearty like lamb braised with mogette beans or pork loin with rosemary and garlic to bring out its ripe fruit and smooth tannins.
