Description
France: Languedoc-Roussillon
Firm & Spicy Red
Medium-Full Body - Lightly Oaked
ABV 14.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A Southern French blend with dark fruit, warm spice and a savoury edge, showing both Roussillon sun and Mediterranean freshness.
The Lowdown:
From the sun-soaked slopes of the Agly Valley in Roussillon, this is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan from low-yielding vines rooted in rocky schist and limestone. The combination brings concentrated black cherry and blackberry fruit, peppery spice, and a savoury, herbal note reminiscent of the surrounding garrigue. Gentle handling in the winery preserves freshness while allowing supple tannins and a firm, food-friendly structure to develop. There's depth and ripeness here, but also a lift that keeps it from feeling heavy - a classic expression of the region's ability to deliver power, complexity and drinkability in the same glass.
The Producer:
Michel Chapoutier's reach extends into the sunny Roussillon, where Domaine de Bila-Haut nestles in Latour-de-France. This southern outpost benefits from Chapoutier's meticulous approach. Here, ancient vines and their low yields concentrating flavour in the grapes. Grenache, Syrah and Carignan bask in the sunshine, while north-facing slopes and cooling winds add a touch of elegance to the white blend. For reds, schist and gneiss soils give rise to structured, characterful wines that embody the spirit of the Roussillon. Chapoutier clearly has a knack for finding hidden gems, and Domaine de Bila-Haut shines as one of them.
When to Drink:
Spot-on with grilled lamb, cassoulet or roast vegetables - and in summer, give it a brief chill for extra swagger.
