Description
In a nutshell:
A glorious earthy, meaty and ripe Chianti from one of the best traditional style producers in Tuscany
The lowdown:
Tuscany's own grape variety, Sangiovese, is always the thread that ties together the varying styles of Chianti to be seen throughout this part of Italy. But the approach taken by different producers can certainly be seen in the end product. Cantine Vittorio Innocente, whose wines have been regulars in our lists for many years, is certainly at the traditional end of the scale. Alongside the Sangiovese is some Canaiolo which goes to make this undisguised, old school wine. We'll get our health warning in and say that this isn't going be up everyone's street. Upfront fruit is not the style here, rather the more developed meaty and earthy side of things, but if that's the sort of thing you can appreciate then this is a really well made example that's well worth the money. In a world where primary fruit and silky smoothness is much sought after it's great that some places are still making such rustic and honest wines.
The Producer:
Amid the undulating hills of Tuscany, Cantine Vittorio Innocenti stands as a testament to tradition and familial passion. Founded by Vittorio Innocenti, a former philosopher teacher, this quaint estate is now on the hands of his son, Tommaso. With approximately 16 hectares of vineyards and ancient cellars tracing back to the 13th century in the medieval town of Montefollonico, traditional values are what this estate is all about.
When to drink:
Forget about fruit, this earthy Chianti has a wonderfully meaty, leathery character which makes it a superb partner for charcuterie, pate, cheese and a chunk of good bread.
