Description
In a nutshell:
A luscious and mouthfilling sweet Australian fortified wine from an iconic producer in Rutherglen, Victoria.
The lowdown:
This type of rich and sweet fortified wine is one of the original styles of Australian wines and one that's really been overtaken in the last few decades. However there are still some producers left, like Campbells, who make good quality examples which are worth seeking out. It's made in a solera system, like sherry, where new wine is added to barrels from previous years and is drawn off for bottling in a manner designed to ensure consistency of style. It's got a lovely bright amber, gold colour with copper tints. To start there is fresh raisin fruit backed by a hint of fortifying spirit and aged oak characters, then luscious mouthfilling raisin fruit is followed by cleansing spirit on the back palate. Wonderfully rich, sweet and opulent.
The Producer:
The Campbell family have been winemakers in Rutherglen, Northeast Victoria, since 1870. Over 140 years of tradition, passion and experience all combine to capture the full flavours of Rutherglen. Currently running the business are the 5th generation of the family in the shape of Julie Campbell who is head winemaker and her sister Jane the MD. Their wines spring from the unique qualities of the Rutherglen Wine Region, five generations of knowledge and a dedication to innovation. They have a hands-on approach and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
When to drink:
Excellent chilled as an aperitif or with strong cheeses, plum pudding or after dinner with freshly brewed coffee.
