Description
In a nutshell:
A robust and rich Australian red from North East Victoria.
The lowdown:
Not a common wine we know, but this Durif from Rutherglen in Australia really does pack a punch. After fermentation it spent 18 months in French and American oak puncheons. Known for its powerful tannins this is usually a robust wine that requires some ageing however Campbells have produced here a medium-full bodied example that is a cracking drink right now. Flavours of blood plums, blackberry jam, and touches of vanilla oak combine with black pepper and earthy notes, robust tannins, and a clean, minerally core result in a complex, and well-made red.
The Producer:
The Campbell family have been winemakers in Rutherglen, Northeast Victoria, since 1870. Over 140 years of tradition, passion and experience all combine to capture the full flavours of Rutherglen. Currently running the business are the 5th generation of the family in the shape of Julie Campbell who is head winemaker and her sister Jane the MD. Their wines spring from the unique qualities of the Rutherglen Wine Region, five generations of knowledge and a dedication to innovation. They have a hands-on approach and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
When to drink:
This is one that can easily age for 10 years is you wished and it's definitely a wine to drink with beefy red meat dishes.
