Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth, crisp, dry white sparkling wine with subtle white fruit and spice flavours, from Balfour in Kent.
The lowdown:
Made from 100% Chardonnay, produced from two sites across the estate, Old Eight Acre Vineyard and Foxwood Vineyard. Both sites are located on Wealden Clay over Tunbridge Wells Sand soil. Only the best quality Chardonnay grapes are selected for this wine. This particular style of wine requires the very best conditions and ripest of fruit. This wine is lemon pale gold in colour and with a fine and sustained mousse. On the nose it is clean and fresh with a touch of autolysis, white pepper, and dried herbs. The palate is lime and pear, the finish offers fabulous hints of lime, salt, and white pepper.
The Producer: Balfour Winery
When Richard and Leslie Balfour-Lynn planted their first vines near Staplehurst in Kent back in 2002, they had plans to become leaders in the budding English wine industry. Their estate, nestled in the Weald of Kent, is perfect for viticulture and while they're best known for their sparkling wines, their still wines are also top-notch. They've definitely hit their objectives, with their wines certainly being held in high regard. As well as this, they've dived into "enotourism" in a big way, proudly calling themselves England's "best vineyard to visit".
When to drink:
Can pair well with fish and chips or oysters, but also a great match for Tunworth cheese.
