Historically dark lager such as this was the predominant type found in the Munich area; the region's hard water playing a role in its production. Brewed using the traditional double fermentation process it's a deep brown with a malty taste with coffee overtones and lightly hopped. A traditional Bavarian beer.
The Brewery:
Located midway between Munich and the Alps in the village of Aying, Ayinger is a relative newcomer among Bavarian breweries. Established in the 1870s the brewery is well known for organising its own local Oktoberfest celebrations since its location precludes it from taking part in the larger annual Munich beer festival.
