The lowdown:
This Shiraz based red blend from the Hemel-en-Aarde region of South Africa's Walker Bay is a reflection of winemaker Kevin Grant's overall approach and skill. Aged for around eighteen months in French oak, a mix of new and second fill, it has a firm backbone without this overshadowing the elegant spicy and minerally fruit flavours. It's subtle, classic and lingers long in the mouth and is a very polished, understated and moreishly drinkable wine.
The Producer:
Ataraxia is a boutique South African winery founded in 2004 when, in partnership with a few friends, husband and wife Kevin and Hanli Grant purchased 50 hectares of prime vineyard land to get the project going. They're situated in a unique landscape known as The Skyfields lying on the most elevated section of the Hemel-en-Aarde area. Nestled on this commanding rise beneath the soaring Babylons Toren mountain range, the vineyards are planted on some of the most spectacular terroir South Africa has to offer. It is a place where wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth are crafted - proudly holding their own in the international arena. Kevin Grant is a winemaker with a minimalist, non-interventionist approach, geared to reflect sense of place and expression of terroir.
When to drink:
Elegant enough to make good stand alone drinking, this is also well matched by grilled meats and mature cheeses.
