A satisfyingly complex, but very approachable style of Piedmontese Nebbiolo.
The lowdown:
Here's a wine with an attractive pale brick red colour, just typical of Nebbiolo, which has sweet aromatic aromas of roses, tobacco and spices that certainly draw you in. The ripe cherry and berry fruits are up front on the palate and it finishes with an earthy, savoury complexity with finely-grained tannins. Nebbiolo is famous as the grape variety that goes to make the long-lived Barolos of Piedmont but, in the right hands as here, it also makes very rewarding, early drinking wines.
The Producer:
Alasia, is part of one of Piedmont's largest and most forward-thinking co-operatives and situated in the Monferrato hills in the heart of Barbera d'Asti territory. Here they work with 230 grower members to source quality grapes from around 690ha of vineyards. Despite their size they have a real family run feel about them thanks largely to the husband and wife management/winemaking team of Claudio Manera and Lella Burdese. Founded in 1954 by Livio Manera, father of the current director and winemaker Claudio, over the past 60 years they've become a major winemaking force in Piedmont.
When to drink:
A good example of Piedmont's premier red variety and great with rich meat stews, or meaty pasta dishes.
