Description
In a nutshell:
Classic Dark Amber German smoked eer from Sclenkerla of Bamberg, Bavaria.
The lowdown:
This is Schlenkerla's flagship beer. It has a dark amber body, with striking aromas of smoked ham, with caramel and some toffee like notes. The flavour is slighty sour, with smoke and dark pitted fruits. The finish is very smooth with the fruit like flavours coming through at the end. A fabulous and distinctive beer.
The Brewery:
Located in the Bavarian city of Bamberg, Schlenkerla must rank as one of Germany's most unique, if not historic, breweries. The brewery is located within a 12th century inn which originally gained its name from a brewer with a rather wobbly schlenkernd gait. Their three main brews of urbock, marzen and weizen all share the signature smoked style. A pilsner has been introduced relatively recently and although brewed from unsmoked grain, its proximity to the smoking operation indeed leads to the inevitable house style. Famously, draught ale is still served from oak casks at the brewery.
Style - Bock, Marzen & Festbiers ABV 5.1% - Moderate Strength
