Description
In a nutshell:
A strong and smoky seasonally brewed German double bock from Sclenkerla of Bamberg, Bavaria.
The lowdown:
Aecht Schlenkerla's USP is their range of smoked beers which are brewed in a wide range of styles. This double bock Doppelbock is brewed seasonally each year for the Christmas/Winter period. Here the malt is kilned by an oak wood fire to give its unique flavour and together with a full body and rich, strong character it makes a winter warmer to remember.
The Brewery:
Located in the Bavarian city of Bamberg, Schlenkerla must rank as one of Germany's most unique, if not historic, breweries. The brewery is located within a 12th century inn which originally gained its name from a brewer with a rather wobbly schlenkernd gait. Their three main brews of urbock, marzen and weizen all share the signature smoked style. A pilsner has been introduced relatively recently and although brewed from unsmoked grain, its proximity to the smoking operation indeed leads to the inevitable house style. Famously, draught ale is still served from oak casks at the brewery.
When to drink:
Style - Bock, Marzen & Festbiers ABV 8.0% - Very Strong
