The Curious Case July 2026 - Splendid Sauvignon

What makes Sauvignon Blanc so popular? It's one of the world's most expressive grapes — from the taut minerality of the Loire to the tropical exuberance of New Zealand, with more restrained, textural and complex expressions from many places in between. Splendid Sauvignon is a journey from the Loire Valley to Marlborough via a few stops along the way, each one showing just how differently this grape can express itself.
The Loire Benchmark
Pouilly‑Fumé ‘Le Chant des Vignes’
France's Loire Valley is the spiritual home of classical Sauvignon Blanc, and Pouilly-Fumé is one of its textbook expressions. This flinty, mineral example from Joseph Mellot shows that off perfectly.
The Bordeaux Blend
Château des Antonins Bordeaux Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is the backbone of white Bordeaux where it’s usually blended with Sémillon. Château des Antonins is 80% Sauvignon which stands out clearly in its citrus and herbal character with the Sémillon playing a supporting role adding a touch of depth and roundness.
South African Weight & Texture
Circumstance Sauvignon Blanc
South Africa so often bridges old and new world styles, and that's exactly what's on show here. Bright citrus, gooseberry and ripe stone fruit combine with a mineral streak, while time in oak has added weight and a creamy texture — Sauvignon in a richer, more textural style.
A Slovenian Wild Card
Verus Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon is a relative newcomer to Slovenia, but warm days and cool nights mean it's found a natural habitat here. Even though we're in Europe this one's a bit 'New Worldish' — tropical fruits and bright, grassy notes, but reined-in a bit rather than the more in-your-face Kiwi styles. Bright and expressive, with a bit of polish.
Cool, Coastal Chile
Montes Classic Series Sauvignon Blanc
The influence of cool Pacific breezes plays a part in this Chilean Sauvignon. Zesty grapefruit, lime and green herby notes rub along with a subtle tropical edge and a clean, saline finish. Sleeker and more linear than many a Marlborough Sauvignon, and all the more refreshing for it.
The Kiwi Classic
Earthsong Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
What's at the other end of the spectrum to the Loire? A Kiwi Sauvignon like this — full of passion fruit and guava, cut nettles and gooseberries — the calling cards that have made Marlborough famous. Earthsong is a prime example, and a particularly well-made one at that.
If you've ever wondered why Sauvignon Blanc has become such a firm favourite, this case will give you a pretty clear answer.
