Description
In a nutshell:
A strikingly attractive, light and delicate Aged Tawny Port.
The lowdown:
Aged Tawnys are matured in wood for an extended period and, in the process, gradually shed their youthful deep ruby colour as they age. They are filtered before bottling so don't need decanting. The wines used in this blend have spent an average of 10 years in wood before bottling. Warre's Otima is regular award winner and it's not hard to see why. With its light and delicate mouthfeel, raisined flavours and lingering finish.
The Producer:
Founded in 1670, Warre's is old British Port House which has remained a family-owned company throughout its long history. These days it's a part of the Symington Family Estates who are the sole remaining independent Port producer to be in the hands of just one family. In addition to Warre's they also count Graham's, Cockburn's and Dow's in their stable. The backbone of Warre's Ports come from Quinta da Cavadhina in the Pinhão valley, and the historic vineyard of Quinta do Retiro Antigo in the Rio Torto valley. The winery at Cavadinha is one of the most specialised small 'boutique' wineries, in the Douro and is features in Hugh Johnson's World Atlas of Wine. In addition, some of Warre's finest Ports come from the privately family-owned vineyards of Alvito and Netas.
When to drink:
Its lovely pale colour only adds to its seductiveness and it's at its best served slightly chilled.
