Description
Germany: Pfalz, Baden & Franken
Mellow & Rounded Red
Light-Medium Body - Lightly Oaked
ABV 12.5% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A drier, spicier style of Pinot Noir with red fruit, subtle oak and a savoury edge that makes it food-friendly.
The Lowdown:
Pinot Noir can wear many hats - plush in California, bright in New Zealand, juicy in Australia. This German version comes at it from a different angle, leaning drier and spicier. Red cherry and raspberry lead the way, joined by earthy notes and a gentle lift of spice from a touch of oak ageing. The palate is fresh and focused, balancing fruit with grip, and finishing with a savoury twist that makes it more gastronomic than most at this level. It's Pinot Noir played with a straighter bat, offering clarity and poise where others chase softness.
The Producer:
The WALT label takes its name from Walter S. Siegel, a German wine merchant who began trading in the late 1800s. In 1937, his son Hans teamed up with English cricketer Ian Peebles to bring Siegel's wines to the UK - a bit of an unlikely Anglo-German pairing but one that worked very well and has stood the test of time. Today, WALT continues strongly with a range modern German wines made by Villa Wolf for the UK market. The wines are fruit-forward and approachable, while delivering clean, contemporary German style.
When to Drink:
Great with roast duck, charcuterie or mushroom dishes, where the freshness and savoury cut keep everything in line.
