Description
Firm & Spicy Red
Medium-Bodied, Oaked
Southern Italy, ABV 13.5%, 75cl
In a Nutshell:
A smooth, complex Aglianico from Campania, packed with dark fruit, warm spice, and firm yet balanced structure.
The Lowdown:
Aglianico is not a grape that gets the same attention as big names like Sangiovese or Primitivo, but down on Campania's volcanic soils, it turns out some seriously good reds. This one's a great example - full-bodied, smoky, and packed with ripe black fruit, with a touch of cassis and wild herbs in the mix. A bit of time in American oak barriques adds a hint of vanilla and smooths everything out nicely. Intense but well-balanced, it's well worthy of a bit more attention..
The Producer:
Situated in the Irpinian hills inland from Naples, Vesevo, produce a delicious range of local Campania specialities overseen by winemaker Antonio Melone. The Campania area is one of the Italy's oldest wine regions and has over 25,000 hectares of vines. Vesevo's vineyards are between 450 and 550 metres above sea level and benefit from cooling breezes from the Bay of Naples. The soils in the area have a poor, volcanic character influenced by the ash blown in from the nearby Mount Vesuvius.
When to Drink:
Smooth enough to enjoy on its own, but grilled lamb, aubergine parmigiana, or a rich mushroom stew are all great matches for its depth and spice.
