Description
In a nutshell:
A luscious, rich dessert wine from Stellenbosch, packed with tropical fruit and a zesty kick to keep things fresh. Sweet - yes, but never heavy.
The lowdown:
Made in tiny batches and only in the best years, this is a proper little treat from Stellenbosch. It's Semillon packed with tropical fruit - think mango and pineapple - plus rich, honeyed flavours. And while it's definitely luscious, a bright streak of acidity gives it freshness, so it never feels heavy or cloying. Traditionally, these wines were made by drying grapes on straw mats to boost the sugars. They've moved on a bit since then, but the result? Every bit as delicious - sweet, vibrant, and seriously moreish.
The Producer:
Vergelegen is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa with a history dating back as far as the early 1700s. Theyve always been an important landmark but the modern era for them really began in the late 1980s following its acquisition by the global mining group Anglo American. They invested millions in surveying the land and extensive planting of new vineyards in the best sites and in 1992 they opened a truly impressive part sunken four level winery was opened which, using gravity, minimises the use of machinery. Currently headed up by Luke O'Cuinneagain who took over the reins from legendary André van Rensburg in 2022 Vergelegen is an instance where the financial strength of a large conglomerate and the skill of excellent winemakers has had yielded wonderful results.
When to drink:
Try it with panna cotta, lemon posset, or a fruit tart - the tropical fruit and zippy freshness cut through creamy desserts nicely. Just make sure it's chilled to 8-10°C.
Suitable for Vegetarians
