Description
In a nutshell:
A ripe, full-bodied red blend from Stellenbosch, brimming with dark fruit, silky tannins, and a savoury edge that adds real depth to its delectable richness.
The lowdown:
A classic South African Bordeaux blend, combining Cabernet Sauvignon's structure with Merlot's softer charm. In the making, it's clearly had plenty of care - aged for 18 months in barrel, which lends subtle notes of coffee, tobacco, and mocha to the vibrant blackcurrant and redcurrant fruit. Mid-weight and beautifully balanced, it has a layered richness with a firm streak of acidity that keeps everything fresh. The spice and oak are there, but never overplayed - this is polished and assured, with pretty decent depth.
The Producer:
Vergelegen is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa with a history dating back as far as the early 1700s. They've always been an important landmark but the modern era for them really began in the late 1980s following its acquisition by the global mining group Anglo American. They invested millions in surveying the land and extensive planting of new vineyards in the best sites and in 1992 they opened a truly impressive part sunken four level winery was opened which, using gravity, minimises the use of machinery. Currently headed up by Luke O'Cuinneagain who took over the reins from legendary André van Rensburg in 2022 Vergelegen is an instance where the financial strength of a large conglomerate and the skill of excellent winemakers has had yielded wonderful results.
When to drink:
Perfect with burgers, shepherd's pie, or a even a simple cheese toastie - its ripe fruit and smooth tannins make it versatile for everyday dishes and it's just as rewarding all by itself.
Suitable for Vegetarians
