Description
In a nutshell:
A refreshing, crunchy Argentinian red from the far northern region of Salta.
The lowdown:
Light to medium bodied this is bursting with energy, the nose has charming florality and a subtle whiff of Turkish Delight while on the palate there's a blast of red cherry and pomegranate flavours. The grape is the relatively little seen Criolla Chica, aka Pais over the border in Chile, which is hand harvested and naturally fermented in a mix of concrete vats and oak barrels before being bottled of 6 months maturation. A fresh bite of tannin and a real brightness on the zippy finish makes this a really invigorating little number and quite a revelation.
The Producer:
Youll find Vallisto in the far north of Argentina in the province of Salta which lies in the western foothills of the Andes. It's run by Pancho Lavaque who comes from well known family of winemakers in these parts. Pancho's aim is to make more delicate, aromatic wines than the traditional big, inky styles more usual of the region. And his team are creating exciting, rare gems, often from old vines and making modern, elegant wines which are light on extraction and big on flavour and complexity.
When to drink:
With its crisp, lively fruitiness it's perfect drunk slightly chilled with barbecues.
