An easy drinking, slightly softer style of Sauvignon Blanc from Romania.
The lowdown:
This is an excellent example of the good value and quality emreging from Romania these days. Subtler than some of the more 'in your face' antipodean styles of Sauvignon Blanc it still has a good concentration of tangerine and gooseberry flavours and a lively mouthfeel rounded off with some softer fruity notes which makes it welcoming and elegant.
The Producer:
Cramele Recas, based just outside of Timisoara in western Romania has been transformed in the years since the early 2000s when Bristolian Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira took the reins. Their 700-hectare estate is now one of the biggest producers in the country and they make a huge range of wines. The combination of having extensive vineyards in an area with great terroir and that has cultivated vines back to ancient times and modern quality focussed and efficient production methods has enabled them to produce excellent and good value wines that are now becoming more widely seen. They cultivate both indigenous and international varieties with great success from good entry level wines to premium cuvées that stand comparison with any other region around the world.
When to drink:
It's the perfect accompaniment to fish, chicken and summer salads.
