The Lowdown
For a textbook example of Alsace Riesling, this one from the ever-reliable Turckheim co-op is hard to beat. It's got that slightly fuller body and extra ripeness that sets it apart from its German neighbours, while staying true to classic Riesling character. The nose is all bright lime and a touch of that unmistakable petrol note, leading into a honeyed, intensely fruity palate with white peach and a streak of minerality. Dry, refreshing, and impeccably balanced - it's Alsace Riesling doing what it does best, with style to spare.
The Occasion
A treat with food, this is spot on with meaty seafood like monkfish curry or Thai-style grilled prawns. The bright acidity and ripe fruit handle spice and richness with ease, while the dry finish keeps it all in check.
The Producer
Regarded as one of the best co-operatives in the Alsace, Cave de Turckheim is situated to the northwest of Colmar. Michel Lihrmann has been the senior winemaker here for many years and his style of dryer wines has been a huge hit, expressing the wonderful breadth of the Alsatian terroir and grape varieties while pushing pure fruit flavours to the fore. From their excellent value Cave Tradition range up to individual Grand Cru varietals as well as Crémants d'Alsace and Vendange Tardive dessert and organic wines, theres something here most palates.
