Description
In a nutshell:
From Piedmont's Gattinara region, this is a rich, sophisticated Nebbiolo with layers of dark cherry, liquorice, and a hint of spice, all wrapped in fine, silky tannins.
The lowdown:
The often-overlooked DOCG of Gattinara, in northern Piedmont, deserves attention as a characterful alternative to Barolo or Barbaresco. And Travaglini have led the charge in reviving its reputation. Rich and concentrated, this delivers complex layers of red fruit, blackberry, plum, liquorice, vanilla, and spice, all wrapped in a beautifully structured, satisfying mouthfeel. Densely packed flavours are lifted by a spicy, violet-tinged finish, giving it both depth and charm. It's refined and elegant and carries a touch of rusticity, adding to its unique appeal rather than detracting from it. A wine with oodles of personality and plenty to discover.
The Producer:
During the last 40 years and in the absence of any other significant producers Giancarlo Travaglini has successfully managed put the historically important Piedmontese wine region of Gattinara firmly on the map. Unlike in Barolo and Barbaresco, the cooler mountainous vineyards of Gattinara produce some of the most lithe, refined and perfumed expressions you'll find and ones that also age remarkably well. Since the estate passed to Giancarlo's daughter Cinzia and her husband Massimo Collauto, now chief winemaker, they've continued to put these superlative wines at centre stage. The wines made at Travaglini are simply outstanding examples of Old World, traditionally crafted, wines that age gracefully while gaining complexity with the passage of time.
When to drink:
Pairs beautifully with braised lamb shank or porcini mushroom risotto, these rich flavours and earthy depth complementing the wine's complexity. Enjoy now or let it evolve over the next decade.
