Description
In a nutshell:
From northern Piedmont, this is superlative aged Nebbiolo, with intense cherry, dried rose, and savoury spice wrapped in silky tannins and a long, refined finish.
The lowdown:
At the foot of the Alps, Gattinara is where Nebbiolos like this one give good Barolos a run for their money. Travaglini's Riserva is only made in the best years, spending three years in oak and another eight months in bottle before it's ready. Aromas of red berries, cherries, and rose petals draw you in, while a taut minerality keeps it fresh and lively. Silky tannins strike just the right balance between power and elegance, leading to a long, velvety finish. It's a perfect example of how Nebbiolo thrives in this under-the-radar corner of Piedmont.
The Producer:
During the last 40 years and in the absence of any other significant producers Giancarlo Travaglini has successfully managed put the historically important Piedmontese wine region of Gattinara firmly on the map. Unlike in Barolo and Barbaresco, the cooler mountainous vineyards of Gattinara produce some of the most lithe, refined and perfumed expressions you'll find and ones that also age remarkably well. Since the estate passed to Giancarlo's daughter Cinzia and her husband Massimo Collauto, now chief winemaker, they've continued to put these superlative wines at centre stage. The wines made at Travaglini are simply outstanding examples of Old World, traditionally crafted, wines that age gracefully while gaining complexity with the passage of time.
When to drink:
Goes brilliantly with venison loin or roast duck - the silky tannins and savoury depth handle those rich, gamey flavours like a dream. Lovely now, but it's in no particular rush to be cracked open yet.
