Description
In a nutshell:
Dark and smooth Belgian Trappist Dubbel from the Brasserie de Rochefort near the Ardennes forest.
The lowdown:
Originally only brewed for New Year's Eve this strong, dark ale from Rochefort is now available year round. It has a rich maltiness with brown sugar and dried fruit flavours all bursting onto the tongue. A touch sweet to start the spicy notes, crisp sparkle, and dry finish keep it all in good balance. The aromas of dried fruits, caramel, spice, and a warming alcohol just add to its elegance and richness.
The Brewery:
When it comes to historical Belgian beers brewed by monks, they fall into two camps; Trappiste or Abbey beers. Brasserie de Rochefort falls into the former. Authentic Trappist beers must be brewed within abbey walls, under the control of the resident monks and any profits made can only be used for the upkeep of the abbey. At l'Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy, Rochefort beers have been brewed for centuries, although the brewery we know today was established in the 20th century and makes a small range of distinctive brews which have a loyal following among Trappist aficionados.
