Description
In a nutshell:
A ripe and tropical Italian Gewürztraminer from the Alto Agide, or Southern Tirol.
The lowdown:
The small town of Tramin in the Italian Alps is where the grape variety Gewürztraminer was first identified and, quite naturally, it thrives in the this part of the world. After pressing the fruit here was fermented and matured in stainless steel to retain all the natural freshness and vibrancy. The result is a wine with an intense and complex nose full of tropical fruit aromas together with spicy notes, a characteristic scent of roses and a layer of minerality. Rich and silky on the palate with flavours of ripe tropical fruits, lychee, exotic spice and a clean minerality. It's all very well balanced with a deliciously long finish.
The Producer:
Cantina Tramin is located in the heart of Italy's Alto Adige region and is one of the oldest cooperatives in the Alps having been founded way back in 1889. Today there are around 200 grower members farming, between them, over 250 hectares of vines. One of the main grapes grown around here is the aromatic Gewürztraminer which the town can claim as its own since the variety was first identified in this area. In 2010 they moved into a striking new winery designed by leading Italian architect Tscholl Werner. The head winemaker is Willi Stürz, a native of the area, who first joined the winery in 1992 and who was Gambero Rossos 'Winemaker of the Year' in 2004. His approach is to balance of traditional methods with the use of modern technology which, judging by the consistently high quality of their output, has been a strategy that's served them very well.
When to drink:
This has richness and aromatics which is well suited to spicy Asian and Indian cuisine.
