Description
In a nutshell:
A fresh and vibrant Sicilian white from for slopes of Mount Etna.
The lowdown:
The slopes and volcanic soils of Mount Etna together the southern Mediterranean climate of Sicily makes a winning combination when it comes to winemaking in this part of the world. Tornatore's Pietrarizzo Bianco, from vineyards on the northern slopes, is made primarily from Carricante which is capable of making crisp and citrussy, ageworthy wines. The grapes for this are hand harvested and vinified in large oak barrels before a period of around 5 months ageing on its lees. The result is a wine with hints of grapefruit and peachiness on the nose which follow to the palate which has a bright minerality and rounded creaminess with touches of tropical fruits.
The Producer:
First established in 1865 and still run by the same family Tornatore are one of the oldest producers in the region. They have 46ha of vineyards on the north side of active volcano Mount Etna at 1,000m above sea level. The focus at Tornatore is on native grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante and Catarratto. While the varietals used are traditional, their winemaking style is more modern in approach, with lower alcohol and more emphasis on fruit. Their wines which have certainly made their mark offer incredible complexity and intrigue.
When to drink:
Its rounded character and vibrancy make it a good stand alone wine as well as one that pairs well with things like rich fish dishes and even light spicy asian recipes.
Suitable for Vegans
